The barrel is printed with markings for finger and thumb placement. grip posture does affect fluency and legibility. Writing with a ball point pen is very different from writing with a pencil. Using a pen is like going up and down the hall on a set of roller blades compared to the pencil which is like running the hall in your sneakers. It makes sense to provide intermediate students regular opportunity to improve control of the pen movements.
